With 48 Seniors graduating in June and heading off to college here in New Jersey and beyond – we want to share some student profiles of our departing Seniors.

McKinley Estime

McKinley will be the first to tell you that he values his independence. At age 9 he sprained his ankle. This experience of having to rely on others left quite an impression on him and would eventually influence his decision to study Physical Therapy at Daemon College this fall.

Serving as this year’s Student Government Executive Board Secretary and Vice-President of the National Honor Society, McKinley has been involved in such activities as Choir, Guitar Club, and Theater Club. He has contributed his singing talents to various school performances, including the Spring Musical Reviews of Godspell and Best of Broadway as well as various Christmas Concerts. He serves as a Youth Group Coordinator and Scripture Reader at St. Patrick’s Church and has acquired over 260 community service hours.

Last summer McKinley attended the Rutgers Newark STEM Program and interned at the Strulowitz & Gargulio Physical Therapy Clinic. He is currently employed at Miles Square Aftercare in Hoboken and is an ardent reader, poet and author of short stories. He has earned over $370,000 in scholarships alone.

Kayla Gonzalez and Z’nobia Spears

Calling the College of Saint Elizabeth home for the next four years, both Kayla and Z’nobia will pursue degrees in the sciences on academic scholarship.

Captain of the softball and volleyball teams, Kayla is a member of the National Honor Society and attended last year’s Rutgers Newark, Aim High Academy Earth Ecology Program. She is a Junior Counselor at the Summer Recreation Center in Jersey City and coaches Roberto Clemente Little League (Ages 7-14). Kayla will major in Biochemistry with a concentration in Forensic Science.

Z’nobia plans to study Biology – Pre-Veterinary Studies. She has been involved in Cheerleading and is a Teacher’s Aide at the Miles Square Early Learning Center in Hoboken. In her senior year, she has been an instrumental student aide with the Office of College Placement, assisting in projects both big and small, from clerical duties to providing one-on-one instruction to members of the Junior Class.

Located in Morristown, NJ, the College of Saint Elizabeth is a Roman Catholic, liberal arts college for women.

Corayma Guerra

Earning nearly $500,000 in college scholarships, Corayma is this year’s highest-earning female senior. She currently holds the position of Senior Class Secretary and is a member of the National Honor Society. She has been involved in the school Mentoring Program for the past four years and volunteers at the local branch of the United Cerebral Palsy Foundation where her experiences have taught her about resiliency and the human spirit. As a student aide in the Office of College Placement, she has been an invaluable source of assistance.

This past summer Corayma attended the Rutgers Newark, Aim High Academy Earth Ecology Program. She will be studying Criminal Justice at Rider University on a $64,000 Provost Scholarship. Her other college acceptances include Albright College, Marymount Manhattan College, the College of Mount Saint Mary, St. Peter’s University and Rutgers University.

Alvin Santiago

A gifted writer and musician, Alvin immigrated to the United States from the Philippines and was faced with the challenge of trying to fit in with the ever-changing world of American culture. Never passionate about anything in his childhood, Alvin soon discovered his love for music, more specifically playing music in front of people. He became a drummer in a band, performing at a local theatre – the impetus for his fascination with the relationship between musician and audience. He credits the latter for teaching him the lessons of perseverance and persistence and how to most importantly take pride in the fruits of his labor.

Alvin, a member of the National Honor Society, is also an avid reader. He completed the School of Visual Arts Pre-College Program in Motion Graphics as well as the Jersey City Visual & Performing Arts Program in Media Arts and TV/Film.

Recipient of the Corazon Aquino Award, Alvin will attend the College of Mount Saint Vincent on full academic scholarship. His other acceptances include Fordham University, Rutgers University, Seton Hall University, and countless others. He has earned a total of $700,000 in academic scholarships.

Chaz Smith

Admitted to Georgetown University, Fordham University, Drexel University, and Syracuse University, Chaz has decided to pursue his bachelor’s degree in Communications at the University of Pennsylvania.

As President of the Student Government Executive Board, he is the architect of the newly instituted Rotating Class Schedule and has made recommendations for improving academics and student life for future generations of Friars to come. He attended the National Youth Leadership State Conferences at both Princeton University and Georgetown University and served as an Elected Judicial Board Member for the North Jersey Chapter of the Jack & Jill Organization of America. He is a Teen Church Leader of Scripture Ministry and Worship Leader.

Chaz is also a member of the National Honor Society and the 2012 State Champion Varsity Boys Basketball Team. He has received over $600,000 in scholarships.

Noelle Staudt

Receiving offers to sing as early as the 5th and 6th Grades, Noelle began performing for family and friends at the tender age of 4. Her professional training commenced at age 13 at Vocal Arts, under the direction of retired opera singer Barbara Urbine-Reidy; Noelle has since studied at the John J. Cali Preparatory School of Music at Montclair State University as well as the Young Artist Institute and Summer Youth Performance Workshop at the NJPAC. She has appeared in countless school musical reviews, shows and recitals.

Noelle, a member of the National Honor Society, has made Distinguished Honors since freshman year and served as both Junior and Senior Class President. She has also played Volleyball, Softball, and Track and has been involved in a myriad of school activities, including Campus Ministry, Choir, and Art Club. As a HOBY Ambassador, Noelle attended the World Leadership Congress at Loyola University and Monmouth University. She volunteers regularly at the Cheshire House, a paraplegic center located in Chatham, NJ, and is a CYO Camp Counselor and Retreat Leader.

She will attend Montclair State University’s Musical Theatre Program this fall. Her talent continues to be sought after with recent performances at the Mayor’s State of the City (Jersey City, NJ) and Men’s Basketball — Rutgers vs. Marquette–amongst others.

St. Anthony High School’s “Friar of the Month” program strives to celebrate individual success and achievement by fostering a culture that values personal, social, and academic successes while heightening awareness of student contributions to the school community.

These students have demonstrated significant qualities that can range from determination and persistence in academics, generosity towards others, caring and friendly to all, leadership, and any other admirable trait. A selected committee has reviewed all applicants and chose one student per grade level each month. The “Friars of the Month” for February are:

9th Grade / Jonathan Cullen

Jonathan was nominated by Ms. Henderson. Ms. Henderson notes that “Jon always strives to do his best in and out of class. He is always considerate of others and is respectful to all of his classmates.” Congratulations Jonathan.

10th Grade / Symone Cameron

Symone was nominated by Mr. Dinielli and Mr. Kochanski.

Mr. Dinielli nominated Symone for “academic excellence and for consistently improving her grade point average. Symone achieved First Honors in the first marking period, and then motivated herself to excel in the second marking period by achieving Distinguished Honors.”

Mr. Kochanski states that Symone “has become one of the hardest working students in my history classes. She shows great confidence in her work and is a no-nonsense student who exhibits great determination to be successful. She is consistent, trustworthy, and respectful of me and her peers.” Congratulations Symone.

11th Grade / Terrell Gourdine

Terrell was nominated by Mr. Duncan for his leadership and class attendance. Mr. Duncan states “Terrell is a student who would likely be the first to admit that getting to school on time can be a challenge, and that by admitting this, he has demonstrated his conscious effort and decision to not allow tardiness to become an issue. He arrives each morning rearing and ready to go. He is prepared with his materials and ready to engage day in and day out. His winning attitude and desire to excel is so infectious, that it has set the tone for the rest of the class. He has also taken on the role as class tutor, where he will tutor and encourage a struggling classmate.” Congratulations Terrell.

12th Grade / Michele Alvarenga

Michele was nominated by Mr. Lillis for her “willingness to lead by quiet example.” Mr. Lillis states that Michele “makes a determined effort in her academic work. She is willing to assist others in a group, often ensuring that work gets completed in a relaxing but engaging manner. During her time at St. Anthony, she has come to recognize her own potential and make a determined effort to achieve. She also demonstrates excellent social skills, a willingness to treat others with respect as well as knowing how to challenge the views of others in tactful way. She has fully taken advantage of the opportunity to prepare herself for work on the college level in all aspects of life. The classroom and the school is a better place to be because of who Michele is and what she does on a daily basis.” Congratulations Michele.
