Minutes of Parent Guild Meeting Wednesday, April 28, 2010

Parent Guild Meeting
Wednesday, April 28, 2010

Present: Rochelle Forehand (Jordan Forehand), Jackie McLeod (Ja’Nasha King), Wanda Slaughter (Aaron Slaughter), Wanda and David Gray (Dominick Gray), Louise Black (Kelly Dunne), Wangdu Wangdu (Tenzin Choney), Fredrica Bryant (mother of prospective student Fredric Bowers) and Mr. Dinielli.

Minutes:
-The meeting began with an opening prayer.

-Copies of the minutes from the March 24th meeting were distributed.

-A warm welcome to Fredrica Bryant. Ms. Bryant’s son, Fredric Bowers, will be attending SAHS in September. Welcome to the Friar Family!

-Faculty member Mr. Billy Bowie presented on the topic of “Academic Optimism.” Mr. Bowie’s presentation included the following:
The importance of a parent/guardian in the development of “academic optimism” in the student.
The effects of negative academic stress on the student.
The purpose and function of the Brain; how the brain interprets information.
The emotional state of the student and its effect on the student’s ability to learn.

-Those present expressed their gratitude to Mr. Bowie on the excellent and informative presentation.

-The New England SAT Prep Program may be presented in a summer program. A minimum of 20 student participants is needed for the program to happen.

-There is also the possibility of a Keyboarding Class to be offered in the summer. This class would enhance a student’s typing ability.

-Parents are asked to give some thought on ways to recruit female students. It was suggested to broaden the sports program to include more options for girls. Parents and guardians are encouraged to contact Dr. Glowski with ideas on this matter.

-A uniform change is being considered for freshmen and sophomores. More information to follow.

-Mrs. Forehand provided an update on the work of the Middle States Committee. There is just one more meeting for this school year. This type of committee provides a needed voice for parents and students in the implementation of the goals of the school. It has been a very positive experience for all involved, and more involvement among the parents is always welcome.

-Mentoring Program applications are available in the main office. Mrs. Slaughter shared the positive effects of the program in her son Aaron’s life and encourages other parents to consider the program for their children. It is extremely worthwhile for the student.

-Parents and guardians are asked to consider evaluating this year’s Parent Guild program. A questionnaire sent to all parents and guardians might be helpful in determining the needs and the direction of the program.
It is also suggested that we might consider having a morning meeting to include those parents and guardians who work nights, and to also explore the possibility of a Saturday meeting.

-A Fashion Show is being planned for the Fall. An initial meeting of interested parents and guardians will be held at school on Wednesday, May 5 at 5:00PM.

-A “Tricky Tray” Fundraiser is presently being planned for the next school year, possibly in the Spring. Ms. McLeod shared her experience with implementing such a fundraiser at her present school.

-Mr. Dinielli expressed appreciation to all parents and guardians for their involvement and interest in this year’s Parent Guild. Mr. Dinielli will continue as moderator for the 2010-2011 school year.

-Special thanks and gratitude was expressed to Mrs. Rochelle Forehand for her consistent hard work and strong efforts that made this year’s Parent Guild so successful. We are truly blessed by your presence, Mrs. Forehand!

Respectfully submitted,

Mr. Ralph Dinielli
